Bollywood film-maker Ajai Sinha, whose last message-oriented film, Khap , sank without a trace at the box office, is now pinning hopes on his first commercial film 3 Bachelors now set for release in theatres across the country this coming Friday.
For the film, Ajai has roped in actor Sharman Joshi, whose work in the latest Ferrari Ki Safaari has been much appreciated by cinemagoers. Like in his 2001-released hit comedy film Style , Sharman is playing a fun-loving college guy.
Describing 3 Bachelors as a mix of comedy, romance and confusion, Ajai says it is a humorous take on love stories of young couples. The film stars Raima Sen, Riya Sen, Manoj Pahwa, Himani Shivpuri, Manish Nagpal and Nigar Khan. The music is by Daboo Malik.
Mischievous yet clean-hearted, Amit (Sharman Joshi) and reticent Jai (Manish Nagpal) are two small town boys who secure admission to a college in Mumbai. “However, on the first day itself Amit gets into an unnecessary argument with Neha (Raima Sen) and Nisha (Riya Sen). His friend Jai also gets dragged into this controversy. The duo is told to explain the reason for this unsavoury episode before Principal Shalini Devi (Himani Shivpuri). Somehow they manage to convince the Principal that they are innocent.” Luckily for them, even the girls decide to bury their hatchet.
“Though this film seems to be in the genre of Style it is not by any stretch of imagination similar to the N. Chandra film because in that there was a murder mystery,” adds Ajai.
However, the two boys are denied room in the college hostel. As they come from lower middle-class families, they cannot afford to stay in a hotel or rent a flat. Since they are street smart, they convince an estate agent to find them a room. A room is available for rent but the owner lays a pre-condition that only families and married couples would be allowed inside the premises. To hoodwink the owner, Jai gets transformed into Jaya and Amit becomes the husband.
The director would have been tempted to make a film with a message but says his film Khap that highlighted the controversial Khap Panchayats, which have been acting as extra-constitutional authority over the years, flopped. “Message-oriented films do not do good business. So I was tempted to make a romantic comedy this time round,” says Ajai.
According to Sharman, who made his debut in 1999 in Shabana Azmi-starrer Godmother , his upcoming film is a roller-coaster romantic ride where he is again playing the solo hero. “To tell you the truth, Raima, Riya and I had a whale of a time shooting for this film. The film’s genre is comedy. I am sure people will love this clean funny youth-oriented comedy,” he hopes.
As the film deals with romance, three peppy tracks have been picturised at Pattaya in Thailand and Mumbai. Nigar Khan has performed an item number.
