Alternate history is such fun innit? And to learn it with some cool animation and likeable characters is like hot chocolate fudge — creamy vanilla ice cream, crunchy nuts and rich, hot chocolate sauce all blending together to do a tingling tango with your taste buds.

The first Ice Age movie came out in 2002 — that is 10 years ago and it is time for a reboot. The movie introduced us to Manny a woolly mammoth, Diego a sabre-tooth tiger and Sid a sloth (incidentally all three are extinct species) and their adventures while returning a human baby to its tribe. Ice Age 2: Meltdown (2006) dealt with the meltdown, part 3 in 2009 dealt with the age of the dinosaurs. The fourth part, as the title suggests, deals with land breaking up into the continents, all thanks to Scrat’s adventures with the acorn.

Manny is finding it difficult to accept his little girl Peaches is all grown up and wants to hang out with the dude Ethan. His wife Ellie tries to smooth things over to no avail. Father and daughter have a big fight just before the continents break up and the family is split. Manny, Diego, Sid and his eccentric Granny are adrift on the sea, while Ellie and Peaches lead the other animals to the bridge and safety.

After many adventures involving pirates led by an evil ape Gutt with his first mate, a pretty sabre tooth tiger Shira and sirens at sea, the family comes together learning important life lessons on the way. The parallel story of Scrat and his acorn is continued.

The first movie in the franchise not to be directed by Carlos Saldanha, Continental Drift is helmed by Steve Martino and Mike Thurmeier. While Ray Romano (Manny), John Leguizamo (Sid), Denis Leary (Diego) and Queen Latifah (Ellie) reprise their roles, new entrants include Jennifer Lopez as Shira, Peter Dinklage as Captain Gutt and Wanda Sykes as Granny.

Ice Age 4 is bright, busy and fun. After the final song and dance is done one question remains, will there be Ice Age 5 in a desert or will there be a reboot?
