Composer Mithoon of 'Tum Hi Ho' fame composes his signature love ballads for whodunnit Samrat & Co

For Mithoon, things have definitely changed after the release of Aashiqui 2 (‘Tum Hi Ho’) but the level-headed music composer-singer doesn’t like to make too much of a song and dance regarding it. “Yes, the going has been good. I like to keep a low profile and let my work do the talking, but this time I cannot escape the spotlight,” says the man whose love ballads are today the toast of Bollywood (some of his hit songs being for films such as Bas Ek Pal, The Train, Anwar and Murder 2).

Now Mithoon has returned with two songs in the movie Samrat & Co. by Rajshri Productions, starring Rajeev Khandelwal. Tell him that a detective flick doesn’t give a composer enough leeway for romantic compositions, and he replies, “I am known for my love ballads and there is space in every film for them. Whether positive or negative, it is expected of me and I think I am up to fulfilling that requirement. Yes, I can compose more than just love ballads, but this is a special gift from God. Moreover, I am not here to prove a point on how much variety I can bring in.”

On friend and fellow composer-singer Ankit Tewari, with whom he has worked not just in Aashiqui 2 but also in Samrat & Co., Mithoon says, “I don’t know how it would’ve been (working together) had we seen one another as rivals. Ankit and I are very good friends and gel wonderfully. Hence we enjoy our work,” he says.

Mithoon is composing music for Mohit Suri’s The Villain, starring Emraan Hashmi and Riteish Deshmukh, and Vikram Bhatt’s Creature 3D starring Bipasha. He is also giving music to the Hindi remake of the 2011 Malayalam film Traffic.
