Mohanlal and his friends had a gala time dancing to the song ‘Pichakappoongavukalkku appuram' inside a train compartment in the cult movie ‘No.20 Madras Mail' (1990). Now director Saji Surendran and his crew seem all set to recreate the fun with the song in his forthcoming film ‘Husbands in Goa,' the shooting of which is going on at the Navodaya Studios at Kakkanadu in Kochi. The interior of a train compartment has been recreated on the studio floor, especially for the shoot. Actors Jayasurya, Asif Ali, and Indrajith are jiving to the peppy beats of the song.

“‘Husbands in Goa' is not a sequel to my earlier film, ‘Happy Husbands.' However, it does have a similar flavour and deals with certain problems faced by three couples. It is a laugh riot,” says Saji, in between the shots. For the film, the director once again teams up with his hit combo – scenarist Krishna Poojappura and cinematographer Anil Nair.

Three friends

Says Jayasurya: “My character is called Govind, a chartered accountant; he is married to Abhirami (Bhama). He is a genial guy but to his annoyance, his devout wife always drags him to temples for one reason or the other.” Indrajith, meanwhile, plays the role of Jerry Thomas, a lawyer who specialises in family court cases. “Jerry's wife, Teena (Rima Kallingal), is not very educated and is irritatingly lazy. Every day, she wakes up so late that he ends up cooking, washing and doing all the daily household chores. Gradually, all this slogging begins to affect his work,” says Indrajith.

Asif Ali essays an interior designer named Arjun, who is married to Veena (Remya Nambeeshan). “Veena is academically-oriented and runs a civil service training centre. Her dream is for her husband to become a bureaucrat and so she makes him sit through coaching classes,” says Asif.

Govind, Jerry, and Arjun were classmates in school and they have remained friends throughout the years.

“They are regular young men but they feel that they are leading rather moronic lifestyles,” says the director. “Fed up, the trio decide to take a break and hop on to a train for a trip to Goa. On the train they meet a cinematographer named Sunny Abraham (Lal), who leads them astray.

All hell breaks lose when their wives come to know of their antics, and they too land in Goa,” explains the director.

Innocent, who played a train ticket examiner in ‘No.20 Madras Mail,' reprises his role and joins the trio as they sing the song inside the ‘train.'

‘Husbands in Goa' is being produced by UTV Motion Pictures. Kalabhavan Mani, Suraj Venjarammoodu, and Praveena also star in the movie. M.G. Sreekumar is the music director. Stills are by Aaghosh.
