“Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam” is an entertaining film that has its fair share of humour. Though the movie is the standard ‘hero rising to the occasion' and ‘good defeats evil', there is something in it that we haven't seen before in a Tamil movie.
Characterisation
With a budget not to be boasted about, Simbudevan has shown some really good visuals and has used his experienced cast well to bring out a solid, different movie. Lawrence puts in a good performance as a coward in a brave man's mask and adds style to the film. His quick reflexes with the gun and the Rajini-style cigarette tricks are impressive (…easy guys, I'm not saying it is as good as the Superstar's). Yes, of course, there is his dance too! The three heroines — Padmapriya, Lakshmi Rai and Sandhya — come and go without much significance. Nasser as usual adds charm to his villain role. M.S. Bhaskar (with his tribal tongue) and his translator bring some laughs but also irritate at times. The frequent reference to Western cowboys from John Wayne to Clint Eastwood and the Indian heroes from Amitabh to Jaishanker make IKMS click.
Though a few lame jokes, few unconvincing social messages from Lawrence and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” sound track could have been done away with, credit must be given to the makers of IKMS for putting in a lot of effort and being bold enough to make a totally new genre of movie. The art direction by Muthuraj and costumes by Sai deserve special mention.
Bottomline: If you feel like going to the theatre to enjoy a Tamil movie, IKMS is not a bad option at all.
