Sunil in a still from the movie 'Jakkanna'

Film: Jakkana

Rating: 3

When the audience has almost given up on Sunil, here comes a story that gives him a breather. It has a nice, hilarious story backed with sub plots and loads of comedy. Vamsi Krishna Akella did not come with a spectacular plot but this one is good enough to bring back Sunil to the forefront. In recent times, both Allari Naresh and Sunil have been giving back to back failures, so when you go to this comic-hero’s film without expectation, you are pleasantly surprised. Too much violence and the length of the movie are its setback. Despite the limitations, the director succeeds in a right placement of a character at the right time making it a fun watch.

A do-gooder Ganesh (Sunil) was taught as a child in school that a friend in need is just not a friend in deed but a god who comes to our rescue. He’ll go to any lengths to rescue any person who helps him directly or indirectly. A beggar who has a melodious voice at the railway station returns Ganesh’s wallet that he accidently drops, is gifted with a clean shave at the salon, good clothes and is made to sing for the Youtube. The song goes viral and he becomes a playback singer and gets a cheque worth one lakh. This is just one example. The next time a criminal Bairagi (Kabir Khan) unintentionally leaves him unharmed during a fracas with another goon. Ganesh now wants to repay this ‘help’ after growing up and that forms the rest of the story. The goon abhors him and Ganesh becomes his shield, also falls for his sister Sahasra (Mannara Chopra).

There are plenty of rhyming dialogues and each of them keeps you occupied. There are many characters and each is on their own trip. Saptagiri plays a martial arts teacher who loses his memory after he receives a blow by the villain. Prithviraj is a riot, he is perfect in the way he dresses and imitates actor Balakrishna and so is his Man Friday who mimics actor Rajashekar. The songs are just fillers. Mannara Chopra has nothing much to do. Cinematography is pleasing on the eye, music is just about all right. But one should watch this film for the dialogues. The director shows promise but should answer why he calls this character Jakkana, it hardly makes sense.
