The Avengers unlike other superheroes are not all dark and brooding. They are bright bursts of colour in their happy black-and-white world. Maybe the real Avengers are filmmakers who let us escape our lives for a bit. Ironman, Thor, Black Widow, Hulk and Captain America seem like super fun guys to hang out with. And that is the vibe this sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger gives out.

The Winter Soldier knows to show you a good time with cool cars, awesome stunts, rocking gadgets, buff men, gorgeous women and the hippest lines. There is also an irresistible sweetness, a good nature that makes it all seem worthwhile after the taking of toast and tea.

So after the events of New York (remember The Avengers and Loki’s mischief with the Tesseract?) Steve Rogers aka Captain America is hanging out coming up to speed with the millennium — the internet, Star Wars and sundry things. Then bad things happen. A S.H.I.E.L.D ship is captured by pirates, Rogers goes to the rescue, but he doesn’t know the whole mission. Nick Fury, the director of S.H.I.E.L.D, is hiding secrets, there is a scary assassin, The Winter Soldier running loose, there is the ultimate weapon of mass destruction, S.H.I.E.L.D seems compromised and Rogers recognises a ghost from the past.

The car chases are mind-blowing and fans of Samuel L. Jackson have a lot to cheer about. Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow with her plump lips and fiery hair is edible. Chris Evans plays Captain America straight — the boy scout in a crooked world, who is not afraid to get his hands dirty. Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce, a senior leader in S.H.I.E.L.D, brings a crinkly-eyed wonder to his part. Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier is menacing enough. If only he didn’t have a Salman Khan in Tere Naam hairstyle!

The movie successfully fuses Captain America’s black and white world where things were simpler with our morally ambiguous one and creates an old-fashioned villain out of our fears of digital snooping.

Please wait right till the end of the movie, for all the credits to roll — told you these are cool guys to hang out with!
