What it is about…
Red Giant Movies’ Vanakkam Chennai is a rom-com produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin and written and directed by Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi. While Siva and Priya Anand play the lead, the other important roles are enacted by Santhanam, Renuka, Oorvasi, Rahul Ravinder, Nasser and Manobala. The film has cinematography by Richard M. Nathan, music by Anirudh, editing by T.S. Suresh, art by V. Selvakumar and stunt choreography by Dilip Subbarayan.
There are seven tracks in the album and the young composer seems to have the knack of coming up with the right kind of tunes to please his fans. The music director has used words such as ‘Hey’, ‘Osaka’ and ‘Ailasa’ to open some of the songs which fascinates. ‘Ailasa Ailasa,’ written by Karky and sung by Suchitra and Anirudh, is easily the best on the album. The same lyricist’s ‘Osaka Osaka’ is sung by Anirudh and Pragathi. Papon and Maria Roe Vincent have rendered ‘Hey’, an interesting song penned by Na. Muthukumar. ‘Oh Penne’ by the same lyricist and sung by Vishal Dadlani and Anirudh is melodious. The same song, when sung by Arjun (UK) and Charles Bosco (UK), has an international feel to it.| ‘Chennai City Gangsta,’ written by Hard Kaur and Hiphop Tamizha Adhi and sung by Adhi, Country Chicken and Anirudh, is sure to be a hit with the masses. ‘Engadi Porandha,’ sung by the music director with Andrea Jeremiah and written by Vignesh Shivan, warrants repeat listening.
What they say…
Producer Udhayanidhi Stalin: We took up this project mainly because we liked the story. Vanakkam Chennai is a romantic comedy that will make you forget your worries with its two-and-a-half-hours of non-stop entertainment. I was keen that director Kiruthiga’s first film should be a winner.
Director Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi: The story of Vanakkam Chennai is about two families; the hero comes from Theni, while the heroine is from London. What type of problems they face and how they overcome them is told in a comical way. The narrative starts with Santhanam and ends with him. It’s been my dream to direct a feature film and when I showed the first copy to a couple of my friends they liked it and I am sure filmgoers will also like it.
Hero Siva: I am happy to do a film for Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi. It is an out and out comedy. There are no vulgar lines in the film and hence everyone in the family can watch it. Priya Anand has got a meaty role and she has done a good job.
Music director Anirudh: When I first met director Kiruthiga, I was happy to learn that my audio for 3 is one of her favourites. I liked the storyline of Vanakkam Chennai very much when she narrated it to me. Composing the tunes for the film was a breeze — at no time did we have to struggle. If the songs are chartbusters the credit should go to Kiruthiga as it was she who selected the best tunes.
