Titles for Tamil films are getting bizarre. After Pizza , Shri’s next film is named after a popular sweet snack – Soanpapdi . And the director S. Shivani says that the name is not just to grab attention. “There is reason why I named it Soanpapdi . The suspense will be revealed during the course of the film,” says Shivani.
Soanpapdi is supposed to be a ‘clean’ crime thriller. “There are no scenes of smoking or dead bodies in the film.” Then what is the crime? “It is about the misuse of technology,” she says hinting at yet another cautionary tale about its incessant usage.
On the Act
Director Mhanukkannan has produced and directed a film titled Angusam , apparently, to create ‘awareness’ about the Right to Information Act. The first-time filmmaker felt so strongly about the issue that he wanted to make a mainstream commercial film than just make an in-depth documentary.
“The awareness about the Act is poor even amongst the educated people. Those who are aware of the law don’t really use it. Through this film, I hope to make people understand the importance of such an Act and use it,” he says and adds, “The film is about a village lad who uses the Act to expose the local MLA.”
6,000 screens for Kochadaiiyaan
Superstar Rajinikanth’s much-awaited Kochadaiiyaan will release in seven languages; Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Marathi and Bengali, world-wide on April 11 in not less than 6,000 screens. The mammoth production starring Deepika Padukone, R. Sharath Kumar, Nazar and Shobana is said to become the biggest Tamil release ever. It is the first full-length film to use the ‘photorealistic performance capture technology’, which we have previously seen in movies such as World War Z and Tintin . A number of major marketing initiatives have been planned round the film including a tie-up with Karrbon mobiles which aims at selling a million Kochadaiiyan phones in February.
Murugadoss’ young team
A.R. Murugadoss has opted to work with two promising young talent instead of the usual heavy weights. Music composer Anirudh and George C. Williams, cinematographer of the recent hit, Raja Rani , which was produced by A.R. Murugadoss productions, have been signed on for Murugadoss’ next film with actor Vijay. The cast and the crew are currently shooting in Kolkata.
