Innovation is the buzzword in Tamil cinema, with talented directors coming up with newer concepts to make their films get noticed. The latest in line is director J. Vadivel’s idea to cast four people to play themselves in Kallapadam , now ready for release. “It's a story of four professionals from the film world. I got cinematographer Srirama Santhosh, music director K, editor Gaugin and me as director to play ourselves. Kallapadam is about the aspirations of these four, who want to make a feature film against several odds. It will showcase the emotions that each of them goes through in the process of making the film, and what happens when the film is finally a success. Kallapadam has a happy ending, as we would like each film to have,” says Vadivel.

Cashing in on football

Capitalising on the World Cup madness, writer-director Amjath is making a movie titled Brasil . Amjath, who also plays the lead, has cast Silva, a leading stuntman, in his film. Brasil is the story of a group of teenage boys who live under a bridge in a bustling metro and have dreams of making it big in football. “Silva and I play the role of antagonists. Realising the hurdles we have come across in our own lives, we take it up as a challenge to help the underprivileged fulfil their dreams. Brasil is a racy entertainer, full of struggle, action, adventure, love and redemption,” says Amjath who launched his production on the day the World Cup kicked off. “The football fever will go on for another year and we would like to complete Brasil as soon as possible.”

Five star film

There are five heavyweights in the fray, but they are not fighting each other. In fact, they are working in tandem to fight the competition. The five are Fox Star Studios, A. R. Murugadoss’ ARM Productions, director Vijay Milton of Goli Soda fame and the actors Vikram and Samantha. The yet untitled star-studded production is already progressing at feverish pitch to meet a self-imposed release schedule of January 2015. “This is an action film which will be shot in India, especially in exotic locations such as Ladakh and Sikkim. We are in the process of finalising a stunt director from Hollywood as the film requires high-end action sequences. It will also have 3 or 4 villains led by a Bollywood biggie, who is in the process of being finalised. Murugadoss was highly impressed with Vijay Milton’s script and immediately decided to produce the film under his banner. For him, this will be a big budget film in the region of Rs. 35-40 crore. For Fox Star, this will be the first big budget film too,” informs R. D. Raja, executive producer of the film.
