After several short films of two and three-minute duration, Karthik Balasubramanian decided to take the plunge with a 20-minute short film. This self-funded film, Kanavugal, bagged a Special Jury Award at the Lake City International Short Film Festival in Bhopal. “This has been a great encouragement and I have entered it for selection in the forthcoming Indian Panorama Short Film Festival scheduled to take place in Delhi. Kanavugal is about the impact of over-parenting on children. In the main roles are Santosh Jayant, Nagaraj, Vigneshwaran and Prabhakaran,” says Karthik. “At present, I am writing several scripts and intend making a few more shorts which will give me the experience to move onto full-length feature films,” says this self-taught filmmaker.

A family drama

Balu Manivannan has signed up Sampath and Saranya to play the main roles in Amma Ammamma , an emotional family drama. “The story revolves around a couple who have been yearning for a child for 15 years. During one of their several visits to the temple, they come across another couple who have two boys and are praying hard for a daughter. The two families become close and as fate would have it, the mother dies during childbirth leaving behind a girl baby. The father, in a compassionate mood, allows the childless couple to adopt the girl, much to the dislike of his sons. As life progresses, obstacles come in the way of the childless couple, including a court order to restore the little girl back to her original family. What follows is an interesting climax,” says Balu.

Fun unlimited

Following the completion of Varayo Vennilaave, director R. Sashidharan has started work on his next film, titled Kadai Enn 6 . Said to be a comedy thriller, the project's lead actors are yet to be finalised. “ Kadai Enn 6 will be ten times funnier and more thrilling than Chennai 28, ” says Sasidharan who had earlier written the screenplay and dialogues for the Venkat Prabhu film. “In my film, I am casting three new faces alongside a known hero and two new girls alongside a known heroine. The film will be Chennai-centric with the typical 'Madras lingo.’ It is a youth-oriented story but will appeal to all age groups,” says Sasidharan.
