Kaliyugam

What it is about…

Scratchers Club’s Kaliyugam, produced by A. V. Vikram and written and directed by Yuvaraj Azhagappan, revolves around a youth who wants to live life on his own terms. S. R. Kadir has handled the camera. While Mugil has penned the dialogue, Kishore has edited the film and M. S. Jai is the art director. Siddarth Vipin, Taj Noor, and S. N. Arunagiri have composed the songs. Siddarth, in addition, has done the re-recording. The audio of the film was released by editor A. Mohan and received by directors Sasi, Rajesh M., Shantha Kumar and Suseenthiran and music director Sathya.

Music highlights

‘Edakooda,’ written by Mohan Rajan, is a fun song. Sung by Steve Watz (Rocky) and Malavika Manoj, it is neither melody nor rap, but something in between. Here, music director Siddharth Vipin has used a Persian instrument called ‘Kazoo’ at the end of the song which is a welcome addition. The second one, ‘Vennaiyile,’ by the same lyricist and sung beautifully by Mukesh, is a folk melody. While ‘Ajala Ujala,’ written and sung by Maranagana Viji, is an interesting number composed by S. N. Arunagiri, Taj Noor has composed two equally good songs — ‘Sirapunji Salai,’ penned by Thamarai and sung by Haricharan, and ‘Eno Eno,’ written by Manushya Puthran and sung by Rahul Nambiar.

What they say…

Producer A. V. Vikram: With the objective of entering the industry, I joined the film institute. I landed a job in a popular production company following which I became an assistant director. However, things did not materialise as expected, so I went abroad and worked there for nearly eight years. On my return to Chennai, I caught up with some of my old friends who helped me set up this company. Our maiden production is Kaliyugam .

Director Yuvaraj Azhagappan: Having worked as an assistant to director Sasi, I know screenplay is the backbone of any film. As the story of Kaliyugam is about a youth, I brought on board some talented youngsters. I am happy the film has come out well and am sure of its success.

Hero Vinod: I started acting from a tender age. After acting in a clutch of films such as Nanda, Samastanam, Kreedam and Nan Mahan Alla , I play the protagonist for the first time in Kaliyugam. I have given it my best.

Music director Siddarth Vipin: I took Carnatic music lessons from the age of two. After my graduation, I pursued audio engineering. I was part of the sound editing team that worked on movies such as The Guardian, Fantastic Four-2 , Underdog and 3:10 to Yuma . The Mohanlal-starrer Kurukshetra in Malayalam marked my debut as music director. When director Yuvraj and producer Vikram approached me saying three songs had already been composed for the movie, and that they were on the lookout for someone to compose the remaining two and the background score, I took it up as a challenge.
