While his partner in the advertising business, C. S. Amudhan, is already onto his second film, can Krishnan Jayaraj be far behind? After gaining valuable experience assisting Amudhan during the making of Thamizh Padam, Krishnan ventured to make his own film. “Sonna Puriyadhu is a romantic comedy featuring Shiva in the lead. I knew Shiva would fit the role beautifully. I have cast Vasundhara Kashyap opposite him. She has acted in Thenmerku Paruvakatru and Peranmai. The story came about while discussing ideas with my music director Yathish Mahadev. After several brainstorming sessions, the script emerged. Purely fictional, Sonna Puriyadhu has more comedy than romance in the screenplay,” says Krishnan.
Spotlight on society
After Ottran, Kaadhalna Summa Illai and Om, which is in the making, Adithalam is PLR. Ilankannan’s fourth directorial venture. He’s also the producer. “Adithalam, as the name suggests, is about the lower strata of society — migrant labour that drives the construction industry and the faceless workforce that keeps the city clean. Adithalam is about their dreams, relationships and struggle for survival. Despite their hardships, there is room for human values, respect and camaraderie and that’s what I intend showcasing in Adithalam,” says Ilankannan who is just back from a 25-day schedule of shooting with the film’s lead pair, Mahesh (Angaditheru) and Arushi (Azhagan Azhagi).
In a serious role
Director and actor Thangar Bachchan’s Ammavin Kaipesi is a unique story about a mother and her nine children with whom she networks through her mobile phone — she considers the gadget an inseparable part of her life, a vital link to her children who stay far away. While Shanthanoo Bhagyaraj and Iniya play the lead, Meenal who is teamed with Thangar Bachchan plays an important role. “It is a serious role highlighting the problems and issues that crop up between a husband and wife. Our roles run parallel to that of the lead pair,” says Meenal who has four films under various stages of production. “I am in Karunas’ Machan and have an important role in Bharatiraja’s Annakodiyum Kodiveeranum. In yet another film, Kaliyugam, I am paired with Vinood (Naan Mahan Alla),” says Meenal, who has 10 films to her credit, including Thavamai Thavamirundu, Adukalam, Sillunnu Oru Kaadhal and Velayudham.
The many hues of love
We think it’s always love at first sight. But, according to director N. C. Shyamalan, seven days are needed for two persons to fall in love. Shyamalan dwells on this premise in Nandanam which deals with triangular love. “Rishi is cast as a project manager in a software firm. Working under him as a team leader is Sivaji Dev. Mithra Kurien plays a programmer in this team. Sivaji Dev and Mithra are in love, much to the heartburn of Rishi who nurtures a secret love for her. He breaks up the team so that the two cannot be together. Mithra, on the other hand, is undecided about her real affection for either Sivaji Dev or Rishi. Is she fickle-minded? What is true love? These are the issues I have tackled in Nandanam,” says Shyamalan.
An out-and-out entertainer
Director Premsai is making a complete entertainer based on his own story and screenplay. “Produced by Gautam Menon’s Photon Kathaas, this film is being simultaneously made in Tamil and Telugu. Jai plays the lead in Tamil, while Nitin in Telugu. Yami Gautam of Vicky Donor fame is the heroine in both. While the film is titled Tamilselvanum Thaniyaranjalum in Tamil, the Telugu version is called Courier Boy Kalyan,” informs Premsai. Santhanam and VTV Ganesh take care of the comedy quotient in the Tamil version. “Almost 40 per cent of the film, involving the hero and comedy sequences, has been shot. We took some time to finalise the heroine who would be suitable for both the languages and with the signing up of Yami we will now proceed with the romantic and song sequences. Karthik has composed the songs.”
