A still from Aayirathiyoru Iravugal

The story of the 1001 nights does not need any introduction. Shahrazad is the quintessential peddler of stories, narrating one each night for 1001 nights to escape death at the hands of the villainous King Shahriyar . Aayirathiyoru Iravugal is a humble re-telling of these tales, weaving into one another, with sub-plots and sub-sub-plots leading from the original frame story. The scenes are filled with wondrous, magical and mythical elements popping up at every turn. So what finally happens to King Shahriyar ? What would you want to happen to a man who beheads a city full of women because his wife, in his opinion, did not honor the contract of “marriage” that they mutually agreed to? Much depends on whether one views him as a victim or perpetrator. This endless debate can be the beginning of another story that we must probably resolve in our minds.

Director says:

"I am honored to be writing/directing a play for The Hindu Theatre Fest for the second time, after writing the first Tamil play of the festival last year. This opportunity has opened doors for our team, and I am truly grateful to the festival directors for this. Aayirathiyoru Iravugal is evolving even as we rehearse in the days leading up to the show, and I hope it continues to do so in the same way as Shahrazad originally intended them to, night after night, day after day."
