I believe if a play works in one culture, it will work anywhere
How and why did you choose to do this play? I like to do contemporary plays. The Max Mueller Bhavan gave us some scripts, and of them, I liked this the best as it had a strong script. How is this play relevant in the Indian context? The larger canvas is the same throughout the world today. The play shows how futile the attraction towards the media is. It is relevant to Mumbai as 60 to 70 per cent of the youth has, at some level, aspired to be part of the media - be it television or newspapers. The play also talks about communal tensions after the unification of Germany. Did you consider adapting "Creeps" to an Indian situation? I do not adapt plays. I believe if it works in one culture, then it will work in any context. I choose a play if it communicates with me. It should be staged as it was written. Do you believe in the theme of futility brought out in the play? Yes. These days, more and more youngsters are attracted towards the media and want to take it up as a profession. The play shows how the characters resort to all kinds of tricks to get a job but finally get nothing in the end. It is this competitive spirit, which I think, is futile. |
