Following the success of Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam ( KTVI ), actor-director Radhakrishnan Parthiban has announced its sequel — Parthibanin KindalilUppuma . The tagline will read: Company of KTVI, Part II.

“There’s little else decided about the project. Of course, Santhosh Prathap, Thambi Ramiah and Vijay Ram (who played the cinema-crazy conman Murali in KTVI) will be a part of it,” says Parthiban. Talks are on with leading actresses, because the female lead is a strong one, he shares.

Was a sequel in the pipeline even when he was making KTVI ? “Well, I begin every project thinking it will do fantastically well and that I will take the story forward, but that never happened in the past,” he laughs. “This time, the film actually worked, so the sequel plans are on track,” he adds.

Parthiban managed to grab eyeballs with his off-beat narrative in KTVI . “Till the final edit, everyone wondered if this style would work. It has.

Now, the issue is whether to stick to it or get back to the traditional narrative,” he says. There is great responsibility with the sequel, admits the director. “We pushed boundaries, technically, with this film. We must sustain that momentum.”

The response to KTVI has been varied, says Parthiban. If family audiences are lapping up the humour and the way in which the intimacy between a couple has been portrayed, youth are in awe of the storytelling style. “The film has worked very well in A centres. I confess it has not made any impact in B and C centres,” he says.

The success of KTVI has also opened many new doors for Parthiban. “Every industry respects success. Luckily, in my case, even when my films were failing, no one ignored me.

They felt bad that despite what I was capable of, box office success eluded me. Now, the offers are pouring in — for acting, direction…I’m in a happy space.”

But, for now, his focus is on getting the commemorative shields ready for KTVI ’s 50th day function. And, serving up a piping hot, delicious ‘uppuma’.
