It was a near full house at promising young vocalist Vasudha Ravi’s concert organised by Mulund Fine Arts Society.
Beginning with a Bhairavi varnam ‘Viriboni,’ she went on to present Dikshitar’s ‘Siddhi Vinayakam.’ ‘Gana Murthe’ followed an emotive alapana.
Her voice showed its expressiveness in ‘Brindavana Nilaye’ in Ritigowla and ‘Indaa Vibheeshana’ (Arunachala Kavirayar, ‘Rama Natakam’ in Khamas).
Appreciation
An elaborate, but leisurely alapana in Brindavani preceded ‘Soundararajam,’ a Dikshitar composition, after which Vasudha switched to a fast pace in the swara patterns that drew an applause.
Expressive virutham ‘Thaayir Sirandha’ on Siva and ‘Eppo Varuvaro’ in Jonpuri had heads nodding in appreciation.
The lighter pieces that followed were chosen well and included Bharatiyar’s ‘Chinnanchiru Kiliye,’ Meera’s ‘Maine linho Govind mol,’ Periasamy Thooran’s ‘Thottu Thottu Pesa,’ Papanasam Sivan’s ‘Karpagame Kan Parai’’ and a tillana.
Her voice, adherence to tradition, creative manodharma and composure were the high points of the recital.
R. Madhavan (violin), who was introduced as “a perfect accompanist playing in compliance with the need of the singer”, by Sita Jayaraman of the MFAS committee, matched every expression of the vocalist and Aditya Rajgopalan (mridangam) added the right amount of energy.
