Entammede Jimikki Kammal..., a peppy number from Lal Jose’s Velipadinte Pusthakam has added zing to the career of singer Renjith Unni. The catchy number was sung by him and Vineeth Sreenivasan. The youthful track, composed by Shaan Rahman, has given a new lease of life to his career as playback singer, says Renjith.

“This is the fourth film song in my career. My first song, Nannavoolla... from Doctor Love was also a campus song. That too was released during the Onam season. So Onam is really a lucky season for me,” says Renjith, who also sang in Achayans .

Renjith got the opportunity through his uncle, a close friend of Lal Jose’s. “During the recording Shaan ikka (Shaan Rahman) specifically told me that it should be sung in a such a way that it can be sung by every one. He was confident that the song would get noticed. But we never expected it to go viral. It has become the official song of the season!” says Renjith.

Musically inclined

Growing up in a family that supported his passion for music, Renjith started learning music from Shamsuddin at Cochin Kalabhavan. “By the time I reached high school, I was sure that I wanted to pursue a career in music. So I moved to Chennai after my class ten to learn music.”

He completed his diploma in music before pursuing his degree and post graduation from University of Madras, Chennai. He now plans to do research in music. A disciple of Carnatic vocalists, Trivandrum Krishnakumar and his wife, Binni Krishnakumar, Renjith has done backing vocals for composers such as Ilaiyaraaja, Harris Jayaraj, A.R. Rahman, Mani Sharma, Thaman, and Imman, among others.

He has brought out Friends and Friendship , a cover song featuring popular film and non-film friendship songs. He also tried his hand at composing, for the music video, Anbendrale Amma , directed by actor Rejith Menon. “Singing is always my priority. I won’t compose again unless it is something unique. Anbendrale Amma was dedicated to mothers and Rejith being a friend I decided to give it a try,” he adds.

Renjith agrees that disappointments are part and parcel of being a musician, especially in the playback industry. “But then I don’t regret my decision to make this my profession. Other than passion, dedication and hardwork, luck also plays an important role in this field,” he signs off.
