For urban dwellers like us, the word ‘monsoon’ ushers images of driving through terrible traffic, overflowing drains and pothole-ridden roads. But ignore these prosaic elements , and the rain drops can fill one with different emotions. From feeling romantic, exhilarated, musical to being meditative and enchanted... the rain connects to one’s spirit in different ways. Five musicians will explore one such musical bond in the city this weekend.

The event titled ‘Monsoon Nirvana Season 6’ being organised by Cisne For Arts and Perfect Harmony Productions brings acclaimed artistes Saskia D Rao, Sikkil Gurucharan, flautist Nagaraju, Sawani Shende and Jazim Sharma on stage.

Energising synergy

Coming from different fields of music, the musicians promise to create an energising synergy. City-based flautist Nagaraju points out the session will be wonderful and have a good interaction. “Just like there are different stages of rain...the stage will unfold different musical expressions. We will play individually and also in jugalbandis which will be invigorating,” he smiles.

Although the concert hopes to engage the audience musically, the intent is to help the crowd soak in the music and look inwards to create a spiritual awakening. Classical vocalist Sawani Shinde, who hails from Pune recalls her numerous visits to Hyderabad. The singer states that the wet earth and thundering clouds encourage one to dwell deeper. “Monsoon is the time to pause and reflect on things,” she points out.

City of music lovers

For Jazim Sharma, the concert is a chance to revisit a city filled with music lovers. “This is the third time I will be visiting Hyderabad and I am quite excited about it. When ghazal singers get an opportunity to sing in Hyderabad, they are thrilled as if something good has happened to them. It is because of the encouragement they receive from the crowd,” he enthuses.

Jazim, who is originally from Batinda in Punjab came to Mumbai to pursue his Master’s in Music. He was the finalist of the show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee TV in 2012. “I was the only participant who sang ghazals and it was also a first time that any ghazal singer was a finalist on a reality show.” His journey began after that and made his debut in Madhuri Dixit-starrer Dedh Ishqiya .

Of sufi and more

His focus at the concert will be to sing Sufi numbers. “ Baarish ke hisaab ka music rahega ,” he states adding, “ There will be Sufi numbers too.”

Jazim shares Sufi numbers heighten the experience. “There is a different kind of feeling when you listen to a Sufi number. Shayari mein bahut dum hota hai; Sufi toh seedha khuda se baat hoti hai.” Jazim likes to compose, has released two albums till now and has sung the number Zarre zarre mein me noor bhar from the movie Jugni . “My recent album Suno Tum is the official farewell album of poet Nida Fazli sahab , whose poetry I composed.”
