It was a dream come true for Kalasagaram when they inaugurated their own auditorium for holding its cultural events. The Golden Jubilee Building was inaugurated last week by Ravishankar Isola IFS, Indian ambassador for Laos. The building houses a mini auditorium with a seating capacity of 150 with a well decorated stage and two green rooms. The hall is fully air-conditioned with fine acoustics.

On the occasion, Kalasagaram arranged the vocal concert of N Ramamurthy, disciple of gurus Rajachar and B R C Iyengar. Ramamurthy was accompanied by Dwaram Satyanarayana Rao on violin and D S R Murthy on mridangam. Ramamurthy opened his concert with an Abohi varnam, Evari Bhodana and rendered it in two speeds. He then chose to present Swathi Tirunal’s number Sarojanabha Daya in Chakravaham, Adi talam and rendered it well. The kalpanaswaras were attractive and revealed the artiste’s Manodharma. After a brief raga alapana of Aanandabhairavi, Ramamurthy presented a rare number of Dikshitar Manasa guruguha in Anandabhairavi, Roopaka talam in two speeds. He rendered this sanskritised text of Dikshitar with clarity and ended it with kalpanaswaras.

Later Ramamurthy chose to present a fine composition of Syama Sastry Ninnuvinaga in Poorvikalyani in Misra Chapu talam. This was opened with ragalapana that made considerable impact. He added neraval Tamasambu Itula Seyaraadu and then went for kalpanaswaras. It was simple kirtana rendition but with clarity of sahitya. This was followed by a quickie Krupa Joochutaku Velayera of Thyagaraja in rare Chayatharangini. Then Ramamurthy went for delineation of raga Brindavana Saranga in which he rendered a composition of Dikshitar Soundararajam in Rupaka talam in two kaalams. This rare number was well received.

The main item of the concert was Ragam-Tanam - Pallavi in a set of four ragas; Sankarabharanam,Thodi, Kalyani and Darbar. The pallavi line was Kalyaniyai Azhai Thodi Wadi Durbar in Adi talam. Violin support given by Satyanarayana Rao was an attraction by itself for his own creative skills. Tani avarthanam by D S R Murthy was excellent. the concert ended after the rendition of some lighter items like Govinda Sagara Sayana Vibho in Hindolam and a tillana in Purvi of ThirugokarnamVaidhayanatha Bhagavathar.

This concert was held in memory of P GV Ramanan.
