ALL ABOUT SWAG Guru Randhawa in New Delhi

“Don’t just listen to my songs; listen to any song which you feel would make a change in your life. Hear songs from which you can create a world of yours. Support all real artists,” says singer Guru Randhawa, whose song “Suit Suit” in Irrfan Khan’s Hindi Medium was loved by music lovers. At a time when his contemporaries are beseeching music lovers to listen to their latest songs, such words of appreciating genuine talent from the young singer comes off as a surprise.

With his new found success, the 25-year-old young singer – loved by millennials for Punjabi tracks Yaar Mod Do , Patola and Fashion – would like to make a new song on suit again. “If an actress fits in our budget, I would like to feature Sonam Kapoor.”

As a child he always wanted to be a singer. “From the very beginning, I was clear that it would always be music for me.”

The singer was in the Capital recently for promoting his new single High Rated Gabru .

Excerpts from an interview

On his musical journey

God made it all work. I have devoted my heart and soul to music from the very beginning. I come from a small village in Gurdaspur district. I started writing since I was in school. But I didn’t get any recognition then.

The songs you hear now were actually written long back by me in those days. Initially, people said my songs would not catch attention but I didn’t give up . It’s all as about making efforts and putting your heart into it.

On hardships he has faced

People never rejected me; record labels did. But T-Series signed me; we work together as a family. Many artists come and go but God makes it all work. It’s all his blessings and choice.

On getting into rapping

I am not a rapper. And I believe people in India are not even clear with the whole idea of rap or what it signifies. It's about a genre of music. I cannot be a rapper because it’s not in me. I have always been a singer, that’s why I will stick to singing.

On having his say in videos

Yes, I do give my inputs. I don’t know much about acting and shots, so I try to understand more and be as involved as possible. And I believe that is how an artist can form an affinity with the product-in-making.

On his plans to act in a Bollywood film

If I get a chance, why not! In fact, I have signed a film already, if everything goes well, it will be released soon, maybe towards the end of 2017.

But I don’t want to compromise on my singing, or drop down its level in order to start acting.

I want to learn it first and take acting and singing hand-in-hand. It is very important to learn. And I try to learn from everything around me. I learn from travelling, even from interviews, how to go about your answers.

On singers he listens to

I listen to Justin Bieber these days, because his songs have started making sense lately. I am not talking about his “Baby” sort of songs (laughs). I also listen to Salim Merchant, Bruno Mars.

On trying out fusion or music

Not at all! I am happy with my music. But you never know about the journey of music, someday if I think about a song which goes with Jazz, maybe I will try that.
