DJ Romeo Blanco: ‘All I can say is that I had goosebumps during all my sets’

The Belgian DJ and producer explains why visuals in a set aren’t his priority and why he doesn’t prepare for a set — despite having a deep connection with his musical creations

Romeo Blanco doesn’t like to think within boxes when it comes to music and life in general — and it shows in tracks such as In The Mood , Change and We’ll Be United as well as remixes to Adele’s Rolling In The Deep and Florence And The Machine’s What The Water Gave Me . The 32 year-old, who’s been in the business for 12 years now while touring for 7, will be bringing his ever-evolving musical repertoire to Hy-Life Brewing Company this weekend, proving why he’s a favourite for his high-class remixes.

“Every song I play, I feel a personal connection with; I will never play a song that I don’t like or which does not feel right to my ears,” he comments, “I always try to transmit my love for music to the people I play for, mostly with songs with strong vocals and a touching melody. But a good rhythm can get my heart pump faster as well. For In The Mood I tried to keep it melodic and joyful. That feeling you have when you hang out with friends on the beach, dancing and enjoying a nice sunset. That’s the vibe I was looking for, and I think it worked.”

Being a songwriter and composer, he’s often exposed to various elements whilst on tour and this is definitely not his first rodeo in the country. ‘I always try to transmit my love for music to the people I play for, mostly with songs with strong vocals and a touching melody. But a good rhythm can get my heart pump faster as well’ He echoes similar sentiments to many travelling DJs and musicians, explaining Indian fans are open-minded and down for a good party, “Although being on tour is stressful with a lot of travelling and not much sleep, I feel very blessed to perform here again. Every time I’m in India, I’m excited to see whatever your culture has to offer. Also the amount of energy the crowd has that comes to my shows is always enormous here in India. I can play whatever I want and they all love it. Mainly that it does not matter what part of the world you come from, everybody speaks the language of music. I hope with my music I can bring people together more, no matter what race and colour. Because if you travel as much as I do, you really start to appreciate all the different cultures and flavours our world has to offer.”

So how does the multi-tasker prep for set? Well, he doesn’t. “I only make sure I’m well rested and ready to get the crowd moving. Every show is different so I adapt my music to the crowd. Of course, I have my own songs ready and a couple of homemade edits that I know work well on the dancefloor, but other than that, I see how the crowd reacts to every song and adapt myself along with music I personally love.” He adds that visuals are not the main focus during his shows; he aims to bring the experience back to basics and the music should speak for itself. “You may think that because I do this on a daily base, it’s routine work. I can tell you that every crowd is different. If you bring a routine set over and over again, people will soon forget you. I always know what I want to play, but it changes a lot during my sets.” It’s clearly an instinctual process he’s worked on over the years and Romeo admits it’s all a part of the natural process of being a creative.

And even so naturally are the preservation of special memories he collected over the course of his career so far. One standout moment is his playing the mainstage at Tomorrowland in front of 60,000 people, adding, “Always whenever I describe how it felt being on that stage, I miss the right words that truly capture that moment. All I can say is that I had goosebumps during all my sets. Also now I’m awarded with my first golden record, it feels that I can touch people not only when they come to my shows, but also whenever they listen to a song of mine.”

Romeo Blanco will be playing at Hy-Life Brewing Company, Jubilee Hills, on Saturday June 9. Tickets are available at BookMyShow starting at ₹999.
