Intricate sangatis and sparkling brighas were the highlight of a violin concert by A. Kanyakumari in Thrissur, recently.

The technical perfection she has attained and assimilated in self-evolved style of bowing can be attributed to her experience as a front-ranking accompanist for the past four decades.

The concert started with Vinayaka ninnu... (Hamsadwani) tagged with manodharma swaras. Nannukannathalli naa bhaagyama... is a kriti by Tyagaraja where he yearns for the protection of goddess Dharmasamvardhini of Thiruvayyaru in raga Sindhukannada. A derivative of Harikamboji, this raga is also known as Kesari and Kanyakumari presented the kriti by fully portraying its mood and flavour.

Jagadaanandakaaraka ..., a Natta pancharatnam followed next, the tempo being little bit faster than usual.

Accompanying artistes in thavil and ganjira played alternatively for the charanams, making the kriti more appealing.

A meditative alaapana of Lalitha was annexed to Hiranmayim Lakshmim..., Diksithar’s kriti

Master strokes

With a single stroke she portrayed the beauty of raga Poornashadjam and its essence was delivered through the jandaprayoga of nishadam. Lavanya Raama... , defining the uniqueness and charms of the Lord, was the kriti.

Hindolam was detailed and it was an aural treat as she bowed out charming phrases in single bowing. The kriti Samajavaragamana... was studded with swara passages.

Raga Narayanadri, which was taken next, forms part of the group of seven ragas created by her, each raga bearing the name of sacred hills of Tirupati.

An offshoot of Sankarabharanam, she played Melulothu..., a kriti by Annamacharya. Karaharapriya was detailed before the presentation of Chakkaniraja ..., in which she decorated the swara phase with Valachi, Revathi and Kapi.

Taniavarthanam on the thavil by T. Sreekumar and ganjira by T. Rajaganesh was to the point.

The final phase comprised Bhuvaneswariye ... (Mohanakalyani) and Venkatachalanilayam... (Sindhubhairavi).

Parvathy Venkatachalam gave violin support. The programme was organised by Sree Thyagabrahma Sangeetha Sabha, Thrissur.
