Fans across the city celebrated the return of Rajinikanth to the big screen with Kaala . The film marks the coming together of the actor and director Pa. Ranjith for the second time, after Kabali.
Chromepet’s Vettri Theatres had geared up for the occasion, with bright lights and huge posters of the film welcoming fans as early as 4 am. A day before the film’s release, the management had even proposed a dress code — black — going with the theme of the film... and thalaivar fans obliged willingly.
As we handed our beautifully printed special tickets to the ticket collector near the entrance to our 4 am show, he refused to tear them up. “ Kizhikaruthukku manasu varale ,” (I don’t have the heart to tear it) he said as he flung open the door to the realisation that we were the first to reach.
Across the city in Koyambedu’s Rohini Theatre, fans were in for a ‘sweet’ surprise. CK Bakery showcased their 50-kilogram Kaala special cake a few minutes before the first show started, much to the delight of audiences. The scene across the city, in theaters like Kasi and Sathyam among others, was one of festivity — with paal abhisekams , dancing and crackers setting the tone for the Rajinikanth experience.
