The trailer for the ninth film in the extended Harry Potter universe, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald takes writer J.K. Rowling’s fans to familiar locales, the main one being Hogwarts.
The first film of the prequel series Fantastic Beasts began by focusing on Newt Scamander, — played by Eddie Redmayne — who lands in the U.S. trying to repatriate creatures stuffed in his briefcase and ends up getting tangled in a larger game.
The Crimes of Grindelwald takes us deeper into the Wizarding World franchise (the name given to the universe), setting up the plot for three more movies to come.
Fans will get their first look at a young Albus Dumbledore as played by Jude Law, and the controversial casting of Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald. The movie, set during the Second World War, heavily leans on Rowling’s allegorisation of Grindelwald as Hitler.
Dumbledore takes Newt’s help in tracking down his old friend, giving Potterheads the hope that the Dumbledore v. Grindelwald match they’ve been waiting to watch might actually happen.
The end of the trailer also has a moment of pure fan service, but this needs to be watched, not read.
