As part of its anniversary celebrations, Progressive Painters’ Association (PPA), one of the oldest art organisations in India, presents Micro Trends — an exhibition of small-format paintings and sculptures. An idea conceptualised by KCS Paniker, founder of the Association, the show, which was launched in Mumbai in 1971 (the second show was in Chennai in 1972), is a response to the need for smaller works, to suit shrinking wallets, and wall spaces.

Quoting Paniker, Saravanan S, president of PPA, says, “Small-sized pictures and sculptures, if priced low, can reach a larger art-loving public, and eventually help create a genuine boom of art. Art is certainly not for the rich alone. It is no luxury but a dire necessity for large numbers of people.”

At the show, 114 works (of size not more than one foot by one foot) by 27 artists who are part of the Cholamandal Artists’ Village, will be on display. These include sculptures by Anila Jacob, Maria Antony Raj and PS Nandhan; and paintings by M Senathipathi, D Venkatapathy, V Viswanadhan, and BO Shailesh.

As part of the show, Visual Acoustics — evolution of modern American architecture, will be screened at the venue on April 7, between 7 pm and 9 pm.

A 400-page compilation of Artrends — a contemporary art bulletin, covering 193 Indian painters and sculptors who were active in the period between 1961 and 1982, will be on available for sale.

The price of the works ranges from ₹5,000 to ₹1 lakh.

The show will be held at Laburnumand Indigo galleries, Cholamandal Centre for Contemporary Art, Cholamandal Artists’ Village, Injambakkam. The exhibition is on till April 12.
