‘Form and Content’ by Kiran Kumar Varikilla sheds light on themes of enlightenment

In hues of mustard, reds and earthy tones, Kiran Kumar Varikilla celebrates years of learning curves be it for humankind or just himself, in a show titled ‘Form and Content’ at Gallery Space.

Kiran, a contemporary painter, draws inspiration from the female form. His earlier art works reflected eroticism and sensuality, translated onto canvas. But the recent works become more non-representational and evoke a sense of metaphysical experience. Essentially the visuals can be seen as true expressions of the artist, who is not only engaged in picture making but also furtively traverses across the ecstatic erotic visual realms.

While his works may seem abstract at first with the geometrical fragmentations, each shape brings to focus the strengths of the subject. A candle flame in each picture aims to bring warmth and brightness, and Kiran explains the flame very much plays the main role in these works.

Having been a lecturer for five years at Sri Venkateswara College of Fine Arts, education and the idea of enlightenment based on personal experiences is very important to Kiran, who says he is eagerly awaiting for the start of the show.

Gallery Space explains, Kiran’s works “are like conversations with the self, a soliloquy, which is real and very personal at the same time. Yet there are so many aspects to them that are ubiquitous and universal in their extents.”

Structural grace plays a very important role in these works; placement of the human body adjacent to forms of flora and fauna indicates the appreciation for beauty Kiran possesses.

A sure visual treat, the show is definitely worth a visit; and certainly, viewers of the artworks will be able to relate to Kiran’s work for its speak of divinity and nature through the gentle strokes of the acrylics on canvas.

Kiran Kumar Varikilla’s ‘Form and Content’ will be on display until July 31, commencing with a preview on July 15 at 6:30pm at Gallery Space in Banjara Hills. The exhibition will also be in Mumbai from August 8 until 14 at Jehangir Art Gallery.
