‘Victory will set the tone for more reforms’

Corporate chiefs and chambers of commerce say West Bengal can play a key role in introducing Goods and Services Tax.

The decisive victory of the Trinamool Congress won industry’s acclaim with corporate chiefs and chambers of commerce stating that West Bengal could play a key role in introducing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) which, they say, is a game changer for the Indian economy.

T.V. Narendran, Chairman, CII Eastern Region, and Managing Director, Tata Steel, said the victory would set the tone for further reforms in West Bengal. The CII had suggested comprehensive regulatory reforms to improve the investment climate.

Harsh Vardhan Neotia, Chairman of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry, said the development of rural Bengal had created a positive impact. “The decisive mandate is clearly a strong endorsement for development,” he said.

Sanjiv Goenka, past CII chairman, said the resounding return of Ms. Banerjee was great news for those who want West Bengal to join the race for economic development.

Rajeev Singh, Director-General, Indian Chamber of Commerce, said the time was ripe for the State to take a leap forward by focussing on employment-generating manufacturing sector.
