The third phase of polling for 62 seats in West Bengal began on Thursday with violence resulting in death of a Communist Party of India (Marxist) supporter in Domkal Assembly segment in Murshidabad district.
Tahidul Islam, the CPI(M) supporter was attacked with crude bombs and sharp weapons, locals alleged. The incident occurred at Siropara area near booth number 176 of the constituency. The deceased was supposed to serve as polling agent of the CPI(M).
While CPI (M) candidate from Domkal, Anisur Rehman, alleged that Trinamool Congress workers were behind the incident the ruling party's nominee Shamik Hussain said that the murder was a result of fighting between Left and Congress.
The Election Commission has sought a report from the District Magistrate in connection with the incident.
Large contingent of police and central forces have reached the site where the incident occurred.
Though there have been reports of political murders in the State during the ongoing polls this is the first incident of violence on a polling day occurring near a polling premises.Domkal is one of the ten Assembly seats in Murshidabad district where there is a friendly fight between Left and Congress. All 22 seats in the districts are going to polls during the day.
Domkal has a history of political violence in the past and in 2008 panchayat polls 13 people were killed in the area.
