In Punjab, 81% of the newly elected MLAs are crorepatis, data from election watchdog Association for Democratic Reforms shows.
Rana Gurjit Singh, Congress MLA from Kapurthala, holds the top spot with assets of over Rs. 169 crore, while former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s son and former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal comes in second place with over Rs. 102 crore. Coming third is Sukhpal Singh Khaira, AAP MLA from Bholath, with assets of over Rs. 66 crore.
All three MLAs, whose assets are listed as being comparatively fewer, belong to the AAP — Rupinder Kaul Ruby from Bathinda Rural, Kulwant Singh Pandori from Mehal Kalan, and Pirmal Singh Dhaula from Bhadaur. Incidentally, all three are from the reserved seats.
All three BJP MLAs have assets of more than one crore, while 67 of the 77 Congress MLAs have filed affidavits admitting the same. Also, 44 MLAs have been re-elected, and the average assets of these MLAs have gone up by 45% in five years.
