Social activist Irom Sharmila, who cycled to file her nomination papers to contest against Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh in the upcoming Manipur Assembly polls, does not own a car or a house.

The 44-year-old activist, who ended her 16-year hunger strike over the demand to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Manipur in August 2016, has ₹10,000 cash in hand. She is contesting the polls as a candidate of newly formed political party, the Peoples’ Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA). In the affidavit filed along with nomination papers for contesting the Thoubal Assembly constituency, she had disclosed a bank fixed deposit of ₹2.5 lakh.

In the income tax return filed for the year 2016-17, she has shown her total income as ₹1,89,460. Her affidavit says that she does not have a spouse, nor any dependent. Regarding her educational qualifications, Ms. Sharmila has mentioned a High School Leaving Certificate from the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur, dated 1991.

In comparison, the moveable assets of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh have been listed as two Ambassador cars, one 9 mm pistol and ₹19.26 lakh as cash.

His wife, Okram Landhoni Devi’s assets include a Pajero car valued at ₹35.33 lakh.

The CM and his wife have immoveable assets with a current market value of ₹79.35 lakh and ₹2 lakh, respectively. The combined valuation of the couple’s moveable and immoveable assets adds up to ₹1.35 crore.
