January 17, 2017 03:32 am | Updated 03:34 am IST - IMPHAL:

Vivek Kumar Dewangan, Chief Election Officer of Manipur, said here on Monday that 27,415 voters had been removed from the final photo electoral rolls. Out of a population of 27,21,756 (2011 census) in the State, there are 18,93,743 voters. As many as 1,21,464 are new voters. Mr. Dewangan said there were seven national and two local parties in the State. Official sources said names of non-existent persons were included on the list in some constituencies. Many names had appeared in more than one constituency. In the past, the authorities had made abortive attempts to verify names of some voters. After due notification, the election officials went to the villages, accompanied by police and paramilitary personnel. However, except for a few village elders, all others vanished.
