At the end of an election day marked by sudden downpours and power outages in polling booths, Thiruvananthapuram and Attingal registered a polling percentage of 68.6 each; higher than the corresponding figures for the 2009 Lok Sabha polls. These figures are available on www.ceo.kerala.gov.in.
In the 2009 polls, Thiruvananthapuram had 65.74 per cent voter turnout and Attingal, 66.25. That year the percentage of males who voted in both these places was higher than the turnout of women
Among the Assembly constituencies in the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency, Parassala recorded the highest voter turnout—73.1 per cent. Neyyattinkara recorded 72.4 per cent polling and Kovalam, 71.1. The lowest voting percentage was in the Thiruvananthapuram Assembly constituency—62.8.
AttingalIn Attingal, the highest voter turnout was recorded at the Attingal Assembly constituency—69.9 per cent. Aruvikkara recorded 69.3 per cent and Vamanapuram recorded a 69.1 per cent voter turnout. The lowest turnout was at Kattakada—67.5 per cent. The heavy downpour in the afternoon came as a dampener to the poll proceedings. Many booths in Neyyattinkara, Parassala and Attingal experienced power outages. Poll officials had to bring in candles and torch lights to carry through their work. In some centres, the officials had to even share the torch lights. This slowed down voter identification. Polling continued even after the 6 p.m. at these centres and slips were given to those who were in the queue before the deadline. The rain led to a sudden dip in the flow of voters to the booths.
Two injuredSupporters of the BJP and the Congress clashed at Kodunganoor late on Thursday, in which Shaji, 40, a BJP supporter, and Rahul, 20, a Congress supporter, sustained serious injuries. Both have been admitted to the MCH here. The clash occurred after the conclusion of voting at a polling booth near Kodunganoor.
