The AIADMK will function as a responsible political party, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa told journalists here on Friday, as the party made a clean sweep in the Lok Sabha elections, in the backdrop of the BJP racing towards a majority of its own at the Centre.

Ms. Jayalalithaa noted that the AIADMK was set to become the “third largest party” in the Lok Sabha.

Asked whether she would be part of the Central government, she said such a situation did not prevail now, and the AIADMK would discharge its functions as a responsible party. She conveyed her wishes to the new government and the next Prime Minister.

Apparently keeping in mind the experience of the past three years, she expressed the hope that the new regime at the Centre would be friendly towards the people of Tamil Nadu. Thanking the electorate, her allies and the AIADMK cadre for the complete confidence they reposed in her, she said the people voted overwhelmingly for the AIADMK because of the good work her government had been doing in the past three years. The successful implementation of various welfare schemes reflected in the results, she said. The AIADMK received a massive endorsement, winning the elections on its own.

Ms. Jayalalithaa assured the people that she would strive to honour the promises made in the party’s manifesto. The AIADMK was the only organisation working ceaselessly for the welfare of the common man.
