The BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, on Sunday said Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was “unfit” to rule the country.

Addressing a rally at Surajpur in the Sarguja Lok Sabha constituency of Chhattisgarh, the Gujarat Chief Minister said, “Madam Sonia [Gandhi] said she was giving her son to the people of Amethi and asked them to take care of Rahul [Gandhi]. At times she says her son will handle the country. Can a person, who is not able to handle Amethi, look after the country?”

Citing a report published in a U.S. magazine, Mr. Modi said, a “son-in-law” in the Gandhi family was a “magician” who could make Rs. 300 crore from Rs.1 lakh.

“We had heard of 2G. Now it’s jijaji [brother-in-law]. They have been looting the country. Do you want to give the reins of the country in the hands of such people,” Mr. Modi asked the crowd.

Targeting the United Progressive Alliance government for failing to curb crime against women, the BJP leader said the Congress was “taking people for granted.”

“They [Central government] haven’t spent a penny from the Nirbhaya fund [which was named after the December 16 Delhi gang rape victim]. First seven out of 10 States where crime against women is high are the Congress-ruled States,” added Mr. Modi.

Referring to a recent press meet by Pankaj Pachauri, media adviser of the Prime Minister, Mr. Modi said, “A former media adviser of the Prime Minister [Sanjaya Baru] has made it public that the UPA government was not being run by the PM but by the mother-son duo. The PM’s current media adviser told reporters that the PM gave 1,100 speeches in last 10 years. If this is the only performance of the PM, then who will save the country?”
