The high voter turnout in the ninth and final phase of polling on Monday was marred by large-scale violence in West Bengal.
Several incidents were reported from most of the 17 constituencies in the State.
At least 24 people were injured in clashes reported from the Kolkata-North constituency and North 24 Parganas.
In “hundreds” of booths, polling agents of the Left Front, the BJP and the Congress were forced out and “false voting was recorded,” opposition parties alleged.
The Left Front has demanded re-polling in more than 800 polling stations.
The provisional national voting figures for all nine phases was 66.38 per cent, better than the previous best of 64.01 per cent in 1984 following Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination.
The turnout in 2009 was 58.19 per cent.
