Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday launched another scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying that the saffron party’s acts were threatening the democratic fabric of the country.
Addressing a rally at Bhatgaon town in Sarguja Lok Sabha constituency, she said: “The BJP is crossing all the limits to capture power in this election. Their behaviour is extremely dangerous for the democratic set-up in our country. Elections will come and go, but the way they are doing things and lying to the people of this country, will hamper democracy.”
Without naming BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Ms. Gandhi cautioned the people that no democracy could be safe in the hands of one man.
Applauding the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for “taking decisions for the betterment of all the sections of the society," the UPA chairperson also claimed that no other government had done the welfare work which the Congress party did in its tenure.
Criticising Chhattisgarh’s BJP government, Ms. Gandhi said it had failed to protect the people of the State despite the Centre providing all possible assistance.
“We never saw which State is ruled by which party. The Central government provided help to all the States without any discrimination. The Central government provided thousands of crores of rupees to the State government but it did not utilise the funds for the people of the State,” Ms. Gandhi asserted.
The Congress president also questioned why the people of Chhattisgarh had to migrate to other States when the Central government provided crores of rupees to the State for works under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
“We brought the Land Acquisition Act to protect Tribals from land displacement, but in Chhattisgarh, the Tribals’ land is being snatched. The State government is not giving the rights to the Tribals,” she told the gathering.
