At least 83 per cent votes were polled in East Tripura Lok Sabha constituency on Saturday. Election to the tribal reserved seat ended peacefully except some minor complaints from opposition parties.
Election officials said high turnouts occurred even in remote locations close to border with Chittagong hill tracts in Bangladesh. Huge deployment of central paramilitary forces was seen in the constituency where 18 polling stations were declared hyper sensitive and 252 sensitive.
"73 per cent casting was recorded till 3pm. The trend continued till the end," an election department official said adding voting was occurring in several polling stations even after the 5pm deadline.
86 per cent voter turnout was recorded in West Tripura constituency where polling was held on April 7.
12 candidates including forest and industry minister Jitendra Choudhury are in the fray. Two independent female candidates are also trying their luck in the constituency of 11,38,765 voters.
Six all women polling stations were set up in the parliamentary segment which was repeatedly won by the ruling CPI(M) by a convincing margin.
