mong the 16 constituencies in the district, Malappuram remains an invincible bastion of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). In the last Assembly elections, Malappuram had elected P. Ubaidullah with one of the biggest margins (44,508 votes) in the State. Mr. Ubaidullah is seeking his second term from here. The LDF has fielded CPI(M)’s only woman candidate in the district: K.P. Sumati. She has vowed to improve the LDF’s vote share in Malappuram, which was an abysmal 27.45 per cent in 2011. In 2014 Lok Sabha election too, the LDF secured 27.44 per cent votes in the Malappuram segment. But in the 2009 Lok Sabha election, the LDF vote share was 38.6 per cent.
The BJP has surprised people of Malappuram by fielding a member from the Thangal family. BJP’s Sayed Badushah Thangal evokes curiosity wherever he goes. It needs to be seen if he can improve the BJP’s vote share of 3.15 per cent in the last Assembly election.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, the BJP had polled 4.40 per cent votes in Malappuram, which was less than the SDPI vote share (5.3 per cent).
The Assembly constituency is made up of Morayur, Pookottur, Anakkayam, Pulpatta, and Kodur panchayats and Malappuram municipality. The UDF has an upper hand in all the local bodies.
