R.R. Nagar constituency to go to polls on Monday

More than 4.7 lakh people are eligible to vote in the constituency

It is far from a dead rubber at Rajarajeshwarinagar (R.R. Nagar) constituency, which is scheduled to go to the polls on Monday, two weeks removed from the original schedule after more than 9,000 voter ID cards were found in an apartment in the city. More than 4.7 lakh people are eligible to vote in the constituency.

While the result is not expected to affect the coalition government — both parties are contesting the election after talks fell through — a loss for either the JD(S) or the Congress could give the BJP a fillip in its political attack against the “unholy alliance”.

Drama is never too far in the contentious constituency as the Election Commission’s flying squad on Sunday raided the house of the Congress block president on a complaint that money was stashed there.

Allegedly defying the poll code, Bengaluru Rural MP and Congress leader D.K. Suresh held a press conference on Sunday night at the KPCC office.

Senior Election Commission official Nalin Atul told The Hindu that no permission was sought prior to holding the press conference. Earlier, the BJP had approached the Election Commission seeking action against Mr. Suresh to prevent him from holding the press conference.
