In a late night operation, the Devanahalli police, on Wednesday, intercepted a private bus heading to Bengaluru from Hyderabad and found ₹52.5 lakh in cash in one of the bags. The police stumbled on the cash during a random check of the bus — run by a private tour operator — at Rani Circle in Devanahalli.
The bag belonged to Karthikeyan, a businessman, and his son Venkatesh Prabhu. “We have detained them for questioning,” said the police.
The men admitting that the bag belonged to them. They claimed that the money had been collected from their customers in Hyderabad. “They claimed that the money was payment for a bulk order of wedding cards they had printed for various clients. However, there are no documents to support their claims,” a senior police officer said.
The father-son duo are residents of Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu and told the police they were travelling to Bengaluru, from where they were planning to take another bus to Sivakasi.
The police have registered a case and are questioning the duo to ascertain the source of the cash.
The police have set up random checking points at entry and exit points of the city in view of the upcoming elections. They are conducting random checks of bags in private buses.
