Delhi Assembly polls: Dust settles, over to the voters

February 06, 2015 12:24 am | Updated November 16, 2021 05:18 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

A cold and foggy Thursday morning, the last day of campaigning for the Delhi Assembly polls, failed to beat the heat of elections.

At 7 a.m., a group from Varanasi gathered outside BJP chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi’s house wearing overalls emblazoned with the words “gumshuda ki talash [search for missing person].” They said they were looking for AAP leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, “who ran away after making promises.”

Half-an-hour later, Ms. Bedi emerged from her house and told the media that the last day of campaigning was the “day of gratitude.”

“Dhanyawad, dhanyawad, dhanyawad [Thank you, thank you, thank you]. To every citizen of Delhi, to every party worker… dhanyawad. There can be no other word for the day,” said Ms. Bedi. “I am leaving to fulfil the people’s commitment. We need to make sure that Delhi does not go to polls again in another year,” Ms. Bedi said as she got into her car for a roadshow.

The former IPS officer began her campaign at 9 a.m. in an open jeep with local candidate Surjit Kumar. “Once I come to power, if someone raises his hand on a woman, I will not spare him,” said Ms. Bedi, evoking a loud cheer from the crowd.

The grand rally ended in Krishna Nagar, her constituency, where she was greeted with chants of “Modi, Bedi”.
