With polling just around the corner, the Congress is understood to have decided on whom to pit its collective might and star power. President Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee is among a handful of candidates who are emerging as favourites.
A day after vice-president Rahul Gandhi chose former Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Subhash Chopra’s Kalkaji Assembly to make his debut at campaigning, Ms. Mukherjee addressed a series of public meetings with prominent leaders by her side.
These included actor Raj Babbar, Bhupender Singh Hooda, Anand Sharma, Sajjan Kumar, Yoganand Shastri, Pravesh Hashmi and Kamal Kant Sharma.
On Thursday, Mr. Gandhi and the same contingent of leaders, who were by his side on Tuesday, including campaign face Ajay Maken, P.C. Chacko, Arvinder Singh and Ms. Mukherjee, are expected to attempt and draw a similarly large gathering at Seelampur as they were able to in Kalkaji.
While party sources indicated that ‘who campaigned for whom’ depended on their equation with party leadership, a senior leader said this was in line with the party’s decision to invest its time at constituencies where they were ‘happy with the local cadres and their efforts’.
“In any case, any large gathering in one part of the city is heard of all over the Capital. The elections are near and we are utilising our time as best as possible,” the leader said.
