As it became clear that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was heading for a landslide victory in Delhi, one person who went on a tweeting spree was West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is facing a Lok Sabha and Assembly by-poll in 72 hours in the State, where her key rival is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Between 9.26 a.m. and 9.33 a.m., she tweeted four times congratulating Arvind Kejriwal, but mainly reminding the BJP about the nature of Federal polity, calling it a “turning point in present political situation.”
“Shows political vendetta has no place in a democracy. Country needed this change,” she tweeted at 9-28 a.m. Interestingly, her party ran a violent campaign of “political vendetta” against the cadres of the CPI-M, after the 2011 Assembly election in the State, resulting in the death of man persons.
Of late, being hugely pressurised by the BJP in the State, Ms. Banerjee perhaps had a great sense of relief as AAP’s victory was confirmed and the Trinamool Congress chairperson or her tweeter team started sending messages. The first one was at 9-26 a.m.
“My hearty congratulations to AAP for sweeping Delhi Elections. All the best @ArvindKejriwal the new CM,” she said.
Followed by, “This is a victory for the people and a big defeat for the arrogant and those who are doing political vendetta & spreading hate among people,” at 9-30 and “My congratulations to all the Delhi voters, AAP workers and leaders for big victory. Well done to you. All my best wishes. We are very happy” at 9-33 AM.
She made similar posts on Facebook indicating that BJP’s defeat – rather AAP’s victory – has indeed made her day, week and month, as the party its chief was reeling under huge pressure mounted by the investigating agencies in Saradha Chit Fund scam.
Later in the day, Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to address a rally, where she is expected to celebrate AAP’s victory with much fanfare for the first time in West Bengal.
