The Supreme Court on Monday refused to postpone the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections due from November 25 on a petition by the Jammu and Kashmir Awami National Conference claiming that the State was still reeling under the aftermath of the September floods.

A Bench led by Chief Justice H.L. Dattu dismissed the petition with a single word “sorry” to the JKANC lawyer, senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan.

Mr. Dhavan had argued that the floods were an “act of God” and that the polls should not be held when even 10 per cent of the voters were unable to vote. The petition said that about six lakh people were displaced in Srinagar alone and their whereabouts were not known.
