Polling officers inspect Electronic Voting Machines before they leave for their respective polling stations on the eve of Assambly elections in Doda on Monday.

Amid tight security, the first phase of polls in Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand State began at 7 a.m. on Tuesday. Over a million registered voters will decide the fate of 123 candidates across fifteen constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir while thirteen constituencies go to polls in the tribal dominated Jharkhand.

Altogether, 199 candidates are in the fray and 35,425 security personnel have been deployed at 3,900 polling booths in the constituencies.
