After the decision to start grading system in Class X board examinations, the government may introduce a similar system in Class XII, Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal said on Thursday.
Mr. Sibal said the idea has already been mooted and a committee has been set up. It will examine how grading could be introduced at Class XII.
“We had a brainstorming session on this,” the minister told reporters here on the sidelines of a meeting on the school education programme.
After the committee gives its report, it will go the Central Advisory Board for Education and then to the Council of Boards of School Education in India (CoBSE).
The HRD ministry has introduced grading system at Class X under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) from this year.
The nine-point system starts from A1 (a grade for students who have done exceptionally well in the exam) to E2 (unsatisfactory performance).
He said consultations were being held with the stake-holders to arrive at a conclusion on introducing grading system in Class XII.

How will the cut-off be decided in medical and engineering, if marks are not revealed?
Its good to hear that CBSE is planning to introduce grading system in class XII because it eases the burden of students and teachers.I am working in Kendriya Vidyalaya taking 11 and 12 classes and I realise after X grading system lots of burden is shifted on higher senior seacondry teachers. Teachers taking higher classes can find little bit relief if grading system is introduced in class XII also. Otherwise drop the idea of grading system in X also.
I think the education system has lost its worth by introducing the grades system.
I do not understand this concept of doing away with exams. Students who want to discontinue education would do it anyway (with or without exams). Instead we should open more vocational institutes for students who want to enter the job market at an early age, doing away with exams is not the solution, it will encourage mediocrity and the students will have little or no motivation.
Introducing grading system is welcoming thing in education system. It is reletively more reliable measure of behavioural potential than marking system(measuring behviour potentials in terms of numerical value which makes the people to misinterpret). As teacher educator, I observed that even trained teachers also misinterpreting the marks.Sometimes the shifting from one system to another make the people especially teachers to rethink on scoring.Grading system may helpful to think in such a way that raising the behavioural potentials is more important than raising numerals.Important thing is every teacher should have knowledge of converting changed behaviour potentials into scores and it's interpretation(Educational Evaluation). Then only we can be on the right track to achieve the aims of education.
It is very disheartening to hear the fact that the Central Board of Secondary Education is planning to introduce grading system for class XII.The concept of doing away with exams will reduce the competitive spirit in children and thereby it becomes a hinderance to the children for future endeavours.Exams develop the 'out of the box' and 'rational thinking' of the child. Instead, exams can be made student friendly so that children appearing do not feel the pressure.
I have been teaching in a CBSE school since 1997 in Saudi Arabia.
My observations
1. In CBSE system, students concentrate more on exam based questions; whether they understand or not they byheart and easily get more that 80%.(If they go through last 10 year papers they can easily get 80%)
2.When they go to engineering colleges , they are not able cope up with engineering syllabus. so they struggle to get more marks.
3. Teachers also concentrate more on completing portions and solving board papers and train them how to crak board paper.
Mr. Sibal sir, you are doing a wondeful job. By 2020 Abdul Kalam dream will come true. To ignite young minds, they should understand concepts well. This can be achieved by introducing grading system in class XII also. You are taking the Indian education system in the right direction . \
My suggestions to Mr. Sibal
1. Introduce grading system in class XII also.
2. More weightage should be given to projects and practicals in science subjects.
3. More questions should be asked based on case study done by the students in their respective subjects.
4.Scrab NRI quota in all professional colleges.
with regards
Azad
How this grading is supported from other state government education boards?. When students from CBSC come in competing with state government board students, how are the marks mapped. Grading system also should consider how CBSC want to take other state government examination board along.
Our marks system and academic achievements depend on them have done considerable damage to the very concept of education. It could have been more humane and more dynamic in approach. Grading system will take time to overcome the present system which in my point of view is so deplorable.
Welcome move! Should have done much earlier.
Hats off to Mr.Kapil Sibal..
First the introduction of grading system in class X and now in class XII is truly appreciable. This is because the extra burden and pressure from parents' and teachers' sides for few points(not even %)is proving very harmful to students today(sometimes even lethal)and if the student due to any reason fails to come up to the desired level of marks expected from him/her in a particular exam,it becomes matter of shame for parents or school..
Instead,by giving grades, let us remove this discrimination of point% and let the children enjoy their childhood and explore their hobbies..
This is because by forcing them to study,to get THE BEST % in school wont help in any way.On the contrary if they are allowed to study at the same time indulge in other activity which they want to enjoy, they may give good or THE BEST result in school also..
Yes, I am really glad for what Mr. Sibal is doing to transform education.Grading system and change in exam pattern and emphasis more on projects, practicals and knowledge sessions on latest technologies would defintely make our next generation kids as global leaders in all aspects.
Introducing the grading system in 9th and 10th means more activity based learning by way of projects and assignments. But most often these are not being done as group work in schools but sent as home assignments whereby children are again tempted to use the internet and seek help from an adult to complete the same in order to bag the Grade A1. Where is the scope for 'creative thinking' or 'out of the box thinking'?
Hi friends,
This is really good to hear that Kapil Sibal is going to introduce grading system in 12th also. I am a 9th class student and now i am going to face new system of 10th board but if the students' every step of tests is easily changed to grading how will the children learn to achieve through determination and hardwork and if he scores less how would he devlop his emotional skills ?? For eg:today I aspire to score 100 in maths and started working but introduction of grading system will leave no difference between the one who scores 100 and the one who scores 91.then seeing this i will not study that hard to score 100 as its enough to score 91 because both the grades are A1. So I would only like to say that exams and marks tests students' ability to face difficulties. If every step is converted into easy one how will the children face challenges in life?
I'm working as PGT in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya. This system will certainly develop the knowledge, skill and attitude. The project work and assignments which the students do. They have to search and have to go to the library, consult the books and get the information from different sources. It turns them into perfect professionals and enables them to negotiate their dealings efficiently by producing the latest and updated information. Thus, they will be trained to face day to day challenges with patience and success.
I am Aditi, student of class XI. I was very disappointed when I heard that there will be a grading system for clasS XII. Its not fair because this will reduce the competetive level of students. This should not be done as 95% and 98% of marks don't make a difference and will be fetching the same A+.
I strongly feel this is the best system to be followed in the present situation. Every child has some inborn skill that needs to be understood by parents and supported for the child to be successful in his or her life.
The education system has just become a burden: the burden of projects, competition, coming on top... Marks should also be given in grades so that there is no burden on a child to gain 90%. The parents will also not force their child to take 98%. It is true that there will be no competition but at least the students will not mug up and India will have students with true knowledge.
Grading system is a very good system.
It's good to introduce grading system in Class 12. This can release stress from the minds of every parent, teacher and student.
I think it is very good to have a grading system in India because it reduces the pressure on students. Some students commit suicide just because of their parents and teachers who give them the pressure for getting good marks which will be reduced in future.
I'm a Class 11 student. To be honest, this grading system makes no sense to me at all. Students won't be interested to study in the first place if boards are scrapped. Now we'll have to face the music as there would be a whole lot of pressure to perform well throughout the year. Moreover, not all teachers are unbiased...Our teachers have started threatening us already.
I really admire the vision of Kapil Sibal to transform education system in India. I feel that grading system should also be introduce in the state as well.
This is the best thing I have ever seen in my life.;
i feel that grading system should also be introduced in india................................ this is the best thing ............
The grading system would disturb the education system of students in India. As the present scenario is full of more competitions, grading system cannot prove itself healthy in education point of view. The only and the correct way is our own marks system which will inculcate, through the hard work, the true love for various challenges.
Grading system is the best.it will remove stress from the head of student
The introduction of grading system is a bold step in field of education .It will take away board fear factor from students and their parents. We have seen students are always getting pressurized to perform better in board exams, from their parents and teachers in school. This sometimes worked negatively for students and they loose their confidence level in studies. On the other hand it will reduce the competitive spirit in children and thereby it becomes a hinderance to the children for future endeavour. It have both negative and positive implications.
i dont think that the grading system is good for student so close it
I am a student of the present X grade, and I am very happy with the new grading system. The percentage system was very bad, a child who got 1% below 98% would commit sucide, which is not rational at all!!
Now the class/school toppers would have to manage as they would be catagorised with the other pupils in A+.
Now on the result day, parents wouldnt compare their childrens percentages, which for some students might be embarassing!
And plus the regular class tests are very good as they take fewer portions of the lesson and test on it, not like the old system where bulks of chapters were tested on together!!
3 cheers for the new grading system!
I have completed my 10th this academic year. I felt very much relaxed, unberdened and free of tension during examination and wrote my examinations sucessfully. I also feel that it will the best to introduce the grading system in 12th.
Dear Everybody,
It is a radical change that is taking place in Indian Education. Sri. Kapil Sibal is working hard to change the age-old method of evaluation. I request him to be careful on implementation of the techniques of evaluation. When we plan for Grading system in XII std in CBSE , it should be applicable to other state boards also. Then only there will be modertion and justification. At last we are going to convert the numerical values(Marks) into grades. This is again a controversy. We must find a better way of evaluation . Question paper setting should be changed in such a way that each answer should be graded instead of awarding marks. For example ,an essay in English can be graded Viz, A+_, A, B+, B , c and the like. So is the case with science projects, assignments, Maths and social .Every subject can be graded depending on the attempt and presentation of the student in the examination . I would even suggest to take away the word Examination from the existing system , we can rename it -Assessment- as foreign school boards do it.
In my opinion , Higher Secondary School system has not made any difference so far , it has created only chaos among our states .
All the students are stressed at the peak of their adolesence .
Kapilji , you are right. You can proceed with the change .
Thank you. <
I'm in X. It's wrong to say introduction of this grading system eased the burden on students. I'm a punctual student. In spite being punctual it is very difficult to cope up with activities and projects. If it would be that sylabus is reduced plus a considerable amount of activities, then it would make a sense but at present portion is the same (I don't mind because I love learning new things) and a hectic activities. Please justify this problem. Grading sysytem in XII will be murderding their own children as they will be insignificant in the society.
If grading system is introduced, from which year is it going to be effective. Will it be from this year?
This is a wonderful movement . But,i think that if they allot more marks in practical exams then students get more relief
Please, do fast.
Sir you are right - grading system should be extended to 12th also. Because by grading system a weak student will also work hard to get good grade like a brilliant student.I think that the students will feel good by grading system.
Iam against the grading system.A student scores 98% and another student scores 91%. The difference in their percentage is 7%.However both of them will get A1.If a student scores 89%, his grade will be A2.The differnce between 91% and 89% is only 2%,but they will different grade. However the difference between 98% and 91% is 7%, but they will get same grade. How can it be justifiable.Since grading is based on marks, it can still create pressure on students.
