As per the rules and regulations, the vice-chancellor of a university should be a distinguished administrator and academician. Besides these obligations, he/she should be an individual with vision and moral stature who can ensure a better future for students. The goal should be high-quality education rather than ensuring a large population of students merely graduating without in-depth knowledge in their respective disciplines. Besides being an academician who can fulfil all the goals stated, he or she should be a leader to the whole university.
Ishita Pasricha, I, MA English Honours, JNU, New Delhi
The role of a vice-chancellor in any university is of great importance. In our central universities, goons and bullies create violence, under the pretext of being ‘student leaders’. It is the duty of the VC to maintain law and order, instead of just being a spokesperson of whichever political party is in power. The VC’s role should be beyond such political affiliations.

A vice-chancellor needs to understand students’ opinions. They may have a different outlook from that of the management; the VC must respect that. Only if he/she understands the students’ needs will they be able to strategise the course plans to facilitate education. Students need some time to indulge in their own interests as well.

A vice-chancellor needs to have prior experience in teaching and of having headed a department or college. Looking at how the process of selection is becoming more political, there should also be a criterion introduced that insists on a vice-chancellor having no political affiliations. It would be nice if the students are given some say in the selection.
