Women’s Christian College (WCC) stands proudly on College Road, in Chennai, with a sprawling 19-acre campus in the heart of the city. With the huge gates welcoming students, the tall trees give the college a vibrant and cosy feel. It houses over 3,000 students in its classrooms. The air is filled with laughter, giggles and discussions of intelligentsia, as one enters the college.
Fond memories
Be it for a break between class hours or a quick shake that would fit their bills, the girls of WCC are fond of their Nescafe Kiosk. “It is the place to go to, if you want the best ice tea,” says Sumaiya from the Department of Corporate Economics. Tessy Elsa Mathew, an alumnus, fondly recounts how refreshing the ice tea was. “Two years back, it was priced at ₹15, now it is ₹20. The number of times, I would stop by to have the ice-tea when I ran errands for the professors...” she sighs with nostalgia.
Sharon, a second-year student of commerce, adds that apart from the ice-tea, other beverages, and especially the sandwich make up the ‘emotion’ called the kiosk. Apart from the canteen fare, if someone brings food from home, it doubles up as the ‘lunch spot’.
The students also have a soft spot for their canteen. “It is not just about food, it is a place to meet and greet everyone, and catch up with our friends from other departments,” says Neha Jain, a second-year student of visual communication, while Rizwan, another student chimes in, “We have the clock tower, which is the centre for academic discussion and the chapel.”
