A total number of 4,79,651 candidates appeared for both papers of the exam on April 8
Delhi-based Arpit Agrawal, who came as all-India number one in IIT-JEE on Friday, revealed some of the secrets of his success to The Hindu.
“I watched a movie the day before my exam,” he said. But it required some coaxing to get the movie's title out of him. “Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. But I really wish you don't print that,” he laughs. “I was definitely lucky that it was on TV. It was loaded with so many emotions [that all the tension of the exam was driven from my mind].”
A student of Modern Vidya Niketan in Faridabad, Arpit says he does not believe that topping the exams comes down to the number of hours of preparation. “Everyone require different hours to prepare. The best way is to revise what you learn on the same day.”
Yet to decide on course
He says he is yet to decide which course or IIT branch he will opt for. “Tentatively, I am thinking about Computer Science Engineering in IIT-Delhi. But I'm also considering IIT-Bombay's electrical engineering course.”
His father, O.P. Agrawal, an assistant engineer with the Central Public Works Department, is thrilled with Arpit's result. He is keen that his son goes to IIT-Delhi.
A total number of 4,79,651 candidates appeared for both papers of the exam, which was conducted on April 8. Of the total, 24,112 have secured ranks in various categories and 17,462 shortlisted for counselling for admission to 9,647 seats in the 15 IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi, and Indian School of Mines-Dhanbad.
“We are not going to call everyone who got a rank. The number of people who will go in for counselling are more than twice the number of available seats,” said JEE-Chairman G.D. Reddy.
“Anyone who got a rank between 9,723 to 18,000 will not be called in for counselling. However, institutes like the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, will admit candidates based on IIT-JEE results,” he said.
This year, 1,50,431 girls appeared in both papers of IIT-JEE, out of which 2,886 secured ranks and the first 1,908 were shortlisted for counselling.
“Online counselling began at noon on Friday. Shortlisted candidates are not required to report in person to any of the institutes for counselling,” said Mr. Reddy, adding that the candidate would be eligible on payment of the counselling fee of Rs.500.
“The last day to fill the choice of courses is 5 p.m. on June 10.”
While the first seat allotments would be made on June 14, the second round would be released on June 25. The third and final rounds would be done on July 6.
“For the first time this year, an opportunity is provided to withdraw the accepted seat before the final round of the allotment. Candidates will be reimbursed for the same and will be permitted to write the exam next year,” said Mr. Reddy.

Firstly i would like to Congrats Arpit for rank1 in iit jee 2013... And i am also not at all in favour of 'THE HINDU' bcz watching movie at evening before paper is simply to release pressure nothing else... Making it issue may misguide the coming youth generation...
ALL WORK & NO FUN MAKES JOHN LAZY. Here, the situation is an apt one.
Out of such a heavy competition, Agrawal stood 1st means that it
depends on his working style.
There's time for both work & relief. If both are used properly,
success is surely yours.
This is evident from Agrawal's example.
Thank you for giving us this lesson.
Securing first rank in IIT-JEE is not a small thing. Besides talent, one needs a lot of dedication and hard work to acheive this kind of feat. Congratulations to Arpit who would be an inspiration to many. It would be helpful if he could shed more light on the work he has throught out to acheive this rather than the what he did a day before the exam :) .
i agree with nilay...
for masala, i read TOI... facts only pls.
movie title was printed against the guy's wishes.. or that section of
the story is cooked up.. like how 'journalists' say random surveys
indicate that::"journalists personal opinion"...
There was no need to portray the news story like the way it is now. Why don't you
say, the boy ate, went to the toilet and slept as well before the exam. Watching a film
on TV is as common as any other event. There are loads of TV channels with films
running all the time.
.. while congratulating all those, who cracked the IITJEE 2012, I would also like to draw the attention towards very limited entrance of the girls in the prestigious Institutions of IIT.
As per your report, 150431 girls appeared in the exams. of which only 2886 got the rank. And even amongst 2886, only 1908 will get the call.
Definitely, time has come to take a look on this aspect.
So far as the reports of 'The Hindu' is concerned, I agree with Mr Parthsarthy that it has different Readers and as such it has to see to it that the quality maintained by it continues.
Not from 10, but from 15 till date I m continuing with'The Hindu'. And it is 'The Hindu'which keeps me in good health as I take a walk to the News stall a km away every evening to get the copy.(your Delhi edition comes to Patna in the afternoon).
Cool your mind and do your exam well !!!
Do toppers really do well in the universities-topping their field of study? Any data on it to prove the best produces the best or is it just for the sake of motivation.
Hats off to AR PIT AGARWAL for achieving this feat, which shows his
commitment to the goal not withstanding have some time alotting to
rewind either watching movies, hearing songs, playing a game. All
credit goes not only the individual but also the whole team which
involved with him for making him a success WHICH IS NOT SWEET W/O HARD
WORK . A reader has mention not to take a leaf from "TOI" for caption
that he seen a movie a day before the exams. But the current incumbent
EDITOR has to ensure a century old news paper to keep alive with such
captivating news here there, but assure other readers, "THE HINDU" does
not dilute any news, but give due respect to individuality privacy. For
the information of all,I am a vivid reader of this NEWS PAPER, since I
am 10 years,now I am 49 , once in KOLKATTA I WALKED 2 KMS to have a
copy of "THE HINDU".
i also completely agree with Nilay here,
title sounds like typical TOI....
Day to day preparation is thus found to be more important than cramming of books at the eleventh hour.
Many congratulations to Arpit Agrawal. But I would like to inform Hindu
that, watching movies before an exam is nothing new to make a big deal
about. Most of the students do this in order to ease up the pressure.
But making it a news could misled the other students who might try to
imitate the kid through the whole year, because I am pretty sure our lad
must have studied hard the rest of the time to make it that big.
Sad to see a writing style that may be fits "Times of India". Also, what is so surprising
about somebody doing something in the line of bursting stress (like watching movie)
before exam? Also, sounds as if the reporter printed the title of the movie against his wish! When will we learn to respect privacy of young people in our country? If he did not want you to publish the title (and such wish was not at odds with your journalistic morale), then you should not have published it.
Every piece of journalism serves a purpose - in my view, a story such as Arpit's should serve the duel purpose of celebrating a commendable achievement by Arpit as well as should act as an inspirational catalyst to all the parties concerned. Unfortunately best half of the current presentation of the story (including the title) focuses on some non-issue. It is just that we readers expect a high standard from Hindu and it is difficult to settle for something less.
I hope my son doesn't take this as a cue to justify his getting out to see a movie the day before every exam.
I am sure there is more to Arpit's preparation for the test, than the movie he watched and how it helped him for the exam the next day.
This guy is from Faridabad. Why does Delhi take all the credit every time?
;Bravo' Here lies the future of India
Shabash beta, wanna see you the same style even after 4 years. Please be
